- The Los Angeles Dodgers came back twice against the New York Yankees on Wednesday to win 7-6 and claim their second World Series in five years.
- Trailing 6-5 after seven innings, the California team scored two runs in the eighth on sacrifice flies by Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts.
- Blake Treinen and Walker Buehler then closed the door to allow the Dodgers to claim their eighth World Series in history.
- Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton all homered in the first three innings to give the Yankees a 5-0 lead, but the Dodgers tied it 5-5 in the fifth on two-run hits by Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez.
- Stanton, however, with a sacrifice fly, gave the Yankees a 6-5 lead in the sixth.
- Then, in the eighth, Tommy Kahnle loaded the bases with no outs. Luke Weaver replaced him and tried to limit the damage, but still allowed the winning two runs.
- Jack Flaherty didn’t get off to the start he hoped for for the Dodgers, far from it. After giving up a walk to Juan Soto in the first inning, the Dodgers starter watched Judge hit a two-run homer.
- Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a long solo ball. Flaherty stopped the bleeding by retiring Stanton on a fly out and Anthony Rizzo on strikes.
- In the second, Cole picked up where he left off in the first. He got Teoscar Hernandez and Max Muncy in the glove before seeing Enrique Hernandez fly out.
- Anthony Volpe led off the second with a double. Austin Wells moved him to third with a groundout and he scored on a single by Alex Verdugo.
- Flaherty was pulled after just four outs. He was replaced by Anthony Banda, who struck out Gleyber Torres in the first inning. He then walked Soto and Judge to load the bases.
- He ended the threat by forcing Chisholm Jr. to ground out to first base.
- Cole made his first mistake of the game in the third, walking Lux. Shohei Ohtani then came to bat, but hit a fly ball to left field to end the threat.
- Stanton then led off the third with a solo homer off Ryan Brasier, who retired Rizzo, Volpe and Wells in order afterward.
- Cole led off the fourth by walking Betts, but then retired Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez and Muncy.
- Judge made two of those three outs, including a spectacular catch at the fence against Freeman.
- Michael Kopech did his job in the fourth for the Dodgers, pitching an uneventful inning.
- This is when the match took a completely different turn.
- Enrique Hernandez led off the fifth with a single and Judge then fumbled a fly ball hit by Edman. It was Judge’s first error of 2024.
- Smith then loaded the bases on an error by Volpe, who threw wildly to third base.
- Cole struck out Lux and Ohtani, but then made an error himself by not covering first base on Betts’ grounder. It was 5-1.
- Freeman followed with a two-run single and Teoscar Hernandez then hit a two-run double. It was suddenly 5-5.
- Enrique Hernandez came to bat for the second time in the inning, but he ended it by hitting a grounder.
- Alex Vesia started the fifth on the mound for the Dodgers and loaded the bases, but got away without allowing a run by forcing Torres to hit a fly ball to right field.
- Yankees manager Aaron Boone trusted Cole in the sixth and his veteran proved him right by retiring Edman, Smith and Lux in order.
- Brustar Graterol then walked Soto and Judge to start the sixth. Chisholm Jr. advanced Soto to third base with a groundout and Soto scored on a sacrifice fly by Stanton. The Yankees regained the lead, 6-5.
- Treinen replaced Graterol and came to end the threat by retiring Volpe on a grounder.
- Cole retired Ohtani and Betts on grounders in the top of the seventh before walking Freeman. He was then replaced by Clay Holmes, who struck out Muncy to complete the inning.
- Treinen then looked relentless on the mound, retiring Wells, Verdugo and Torres in order.
- Tommy Kahnle started the eighth by loading the bases and was removed in favor of Luke Weaver. Weaver gave up sacrifice flies to Lux and Betts and the Dodgers regained the lead 7-6.
- Treinen was solid again in the eighth inning, allowing just one hit — a double to Judge.
- In the ninth, Weaver allowed a single to Teoscar Hernandez and a walk to Enrique Hernandez. Mark Leiter Jr. came on in relief and retired Edman and Smith to end the threat.
- Buehler came in to close the books in the ninth, retiring Volpe, Wells and Verdugo in order.
